NEW DELHI:A churning has begun in the Congress on whether to follow the Narendra Modi communications model, which includes social media, one-liners and sound bytes, or rely on personal contacts, institutional strength and political tactics to win elections.
The party’s Generation Next is extremely impressed by “Modi’s magic”, that is working even six months after the elections.
The younger leaders feel lack of proper communications, a failure to connect with people and “marketing” went against the party in the polls.
But this does not answer how Trinamul Congress’ Mamata Banerjee, BJD’s Naveen Patnaik, the AIADMK’s Jayalalithaa and the TRS checked the Bharatiya Janata Party in their respective states.
The Congress used to rely on personal contacts, public institutions, cooperatives and caste loyalties to win elections, but it has systematically demolished regional strongmen in the past 20-25 years and promoted rootless “loyalists” who failed to deliver, insiders say. – From The Asian Age
