Modi, team ushers New Year with work

Narendra_ModiNEW DELHI: Work and more work — is how Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his team will usher in the New Year. For many ministers, the first year-end celebrations after returning to power at the Centre were low-key. Most of them attended office, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the pack.
Sources said that PM Modi, who spent Christmas day at his constituency to observe good governance day, spent the last day of 2014 chairing official meetings — including a long meeting to review the Ganga rejuvenation plan.

The PM also met the parents of the 23-year old Delhi girl who was gangraped in a moving bus on December 16, 2012 and died after a week.

“The PM condoled their loss, and assured the parents that the government would do its utmost for the safety and security of women,” said a government release.

PM Modi also appreciated the victim’s mother for running an NGO.

Senior ministers like Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and Manohar Parikkar also attended office but most of them spent the year-end at their homes. Transport minister Nitin Gadkari flew down to Nagpur to spend time with his family after attending office.

Rajnath also held a meeting with the DG (BSF) to discuss the border situation and India’s preparedness against Pak-sponsored violence.

Urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu addressed a press conference in Kerala, while HRD minister Smriti Irani was in Mumbai. Women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi had a busy schedule on Wednesday as she held rounds of video-conferences with different district magistrates on the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign.

For many other ministers like Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, and Sarbananda Sonwal, it was business as usual at their offices.

Observers see it as a sharp contrast of the UPA, where most of the ministers went back to their constituencies or flew abroad to usher in the New Year.  – The Hindustan Times
