NEW DELHI: The advance team of the US Secret Service, which has already reached India, is working overtime to put in place a foolproof security mechanism for the visit of US President Barack Obama later in January.
The US President is the chief guest for this year’s Republic Day parade and the Secret Service is the agency that provides security cover to him.
Top intelligence sources said that the Secret Service has a laid down drill which it follows whenever the US President visits any country. This is done almost a month before the visit.
Sources claimed that about a dozen senior officials of the Secret Service are already in the capital to workout the security arrangements with various security and intelligence agencies.
Sources said the Secret Service has conveyed to their Indian counterparts that hi-tech security and surveillance satellites will cover and monitor each and every movement of Obama during his stay in India.
The satellite surveillance will be at its highest when the US President attends the Republic Day parade at Rajpath.
These surveillance satellites, sources added, are so precise and accurate that they can monitor and track even the smallest suspicious object or movement at the venue which Obama visits.
The satellite will also track the entire route that the US President takes whenever he is on the move in the capital.
The threat perception to the US President’s visit has already been classified as high.
In addition, US security agencies are also sharing information regarding the possibility of any subversive activity in the run up to Obama’s India visit.
“The American agencies have assured us that in case any suspicious terror activity comes to their notice from even across the border it will be immediately passed on to us for further follow up action,” a senior intelligence official said.
The Secret Service team has also made it clear to the Indian agencies that the close proximity security cover to the US President will be provided only by them and that Indian security forces will have to deal with only the “outer and second cordon security ring”.
As of now a three-layer security ring is being planned. Sources claimed that the second ring and outer security cordon will be managed by commandos of the NSG and the Delhi police.
There will also be a huge team of US Marines, Roof Top Team and even a dog squad, to be flown in specially from the US, that would be used in security arrangements.
Sources claimed that the Marines and the Roof Top Team would primarily secure the venue where the US President would be staying and guard his aircraft, the Air Force One.
Armed with high powered binoculars the Roof Team specialises in providing security cover from the roof and the adjoining buildings. – From The Asian Age
